1. The Makeup Show 2012

Two weeks ago I attended The Makeup Show 2012 at the Metropolitan Pavilion in NYC. This was my third time going and although I was on a STRICT budget I did enjoy myself. The Makeup Show for me is the one place were I can go and not feel weird to  have a full face of makeup on. It’s also a place wear I can go to get my creative juices flowing again. I have been in such a rut due to the changes in my personal and professional life that my makeup artistry has also suffered. Just being in that space with other makeup artist reminded me as to why I love makeup.

I also went to the show to attend some of the show’s seminars. Due to my lateness I missed the Keynote seminar by celebrity makeup artist Johnny Lavoy. However, I did attend The Importance of Color Matching with Maurice Stein and Beauty and the Blog Seminar. If you are a aspiring Makeup Artist attending these shows are a great way to learn about the industry without spending an arm and leg.

Like I said in the beginning I didn’t spent much at the show. I only bought three items GRASP! yes only three items. For a makeup artist you know that’s called RESTRAINT.  I picked up a Model in the Bottle which is a finish spray that is great to use on brides. Some disposables from alcone because you can never have enough and a brush from Crown Brushes. Hopefully next year I can splurge but overall enjoyed myself and I’m glad I attended. A lot of people question the Make Up For Ever 12 color flash. Some people feel its too advanced for them, while others are just intrigued by the color. There are many things you can to with the flash color case…creams are great bases, pressed for time? Use the flash color as eyeshadow base. Reason: using powder shadows will only slow you down. We all know, powder is like concrete. Once on, its on! You can also use the flash color to create blushes & lipsticks. The coral, pink, red & white are amazing colors to do this with. Think of it like this: you got a client, perhaps a bride..she wants a color no one else will have. You, the artist can now customize a lipstick for her & even name it. The flash color is also great to color correct & create foundations. Now, I know that sounds a bit out of this world but its true. I know artists who have left their kits or they got stolen, had a gig & needed something..whelp, Flash Color to the rescue.

I created my foundation my own foundation using the flash color case. Its so fun to mix & formulate colors. I challenge myself daily by picking a random color & mixing the flash colors to match it. Its a great exercise to keep you on your color toes!

    Picture One:

Look at the undertone: warm? cool? yellow? pink? olive?

Start with your primary colors. I’m more yellow, so I used a little bit more yellow than the others. Now its important to remember two things: blue & red are strong, so a little goes a long way. And colors could be both warm & cool, so look at that color wheel!

    Picture Two:

    Mix the primary colors together.

    Picture Three:

After mixing the colors, I lightened it with a touch of white.

    Picture Four:

To add some depth & warm it a bit, a little bit of red. Then mix!

    Picture Five:

    Its a match…whohoooo!!

Now, you have to remember if you were creating your foundation on a piece of white paper, it will be a bit harder to match.

I hope you enjoyed this. I’ve been saying I was going to do videos, but I’ve been a little busy. Plus, I have to learn how to edit. If you have any questions, please feel free to comment or email me at LQRocksBeauty@gmail.com

    Thanks for stopping by:)

  5. Rondell Johnson-Women of Color Master Class

On Sunday I attended Rondell Johnson’s Woman of Color Master Class. You might recall me mentioning his workshop in a previous post. As makeup artist we never stop learning that’s why I believe workshops like Rondell’s is a must if you want to farther your career or improve your skills as MUA.

Although Rondell’s class was geared towards more advance skills, he reviewed some important basis such as skincare assessment, undertones and color theory. He went on to discuss eyebrows and how important they are in shaping a clients face. As he proceeded to groom one of the student’s eyebrows I was shocked when he began to tweeze her eyebrow even though she barely had any hair. He pointed out how it’s important for the head of the brow to be lighter than the end of the brow. This makes the brows appear more natural. He also mentioned that sometimes two different color eyebrow pencils are to fill in client’s brows.

The highlight of the workshop was when Rondell showed us his way of highlighting and contouring. Now I’ve highlighted and contoured on clients before using powders but after seeing Rondell’s technique using creams. I was truly amazed at how natural and flawless his model looked.

The second half of the workshop was practical’s. Each student had to take parts of Rondell’s look and recreate it on their model. As we applied makeup to our models, Rondell came around and gave us a few tips and encouraging words. At end he critiqued our work and told us what we needed to improve on.

All in all, Rondell’s workshop was an eye-opener. His class made me trusts myself more and showed me different ways to approach the art of makeup. I am looking forward to taking his Photo Lesson Workshop in February.  For more information on the Rondell Johnson Beauty Workshop Tour click here.
